Persistent courage requires facing fatigue, depression, and hopelessness. The danger is giving up, giving in, and fleeing from responsibility. Courage enables the parent and child to face this great adversity with their heads up with honor. I am in as much awe of the parents who face the death of their children with grace and dignity, who shed countless tears, and make great sacrifices to do the right thing for their children as I am of the Carnegie Medal recipients.
