When the
World Trade Centers fell, the tremors were felt from coast to
coast. They were certainly felt in the heartland of the country
where I live. Although I was terribly saddened by the hatred
of those who committed this horrible cruelty, I was astonished
by the heroism of the firefighters, police officers, and emergency
workers who marched up the steps of the Trade Centers and regular
people like Welles Crowthor, Michael Benfante, John Cerqueira,
and the custodians at the Pentagon. I was deeply moved by the
courage of the passengers on United Flight 73 who rose up against
their captors. How many lives did they save that day?
