In my response, I tell children a dramatic story about a firefighter who rescues a baby from a burning home. Afterwards, I ask children, “Was the firefighter ever afraid?” Children start to say no, even shaking their heads. Then there is a moment when the light bulb goes off and they begin to say, “Yes, the firefighter was afraid!” We then talk about the importance of fear for keeping us safe and giving us the energy to respond to danger. We can act courageously even while afraid.
