Housing staff publish articles in trade magazine

Submitted by Alison Rogers

The spring 2014 issue of Perspectives magazine, a publication from the Upper Midwest Region of the Association of College and University Housing Officers, contained two articles written by staff from the housing and dining services department.

In "Creating an Inclusive Residence Hall," Quincy Bevely, apartment living coordinator, wrote a perspective on meeting the needs of transgender students in campus living environments. His article explored the complicated responsibility of housing professionals to promote a diverse one size fits all environment while providing appropriate accommodations for those who don’t fully identify with a specific sex.

Alex Abendschein, apartment living coordinator, and Phillip Neuman, assistant residence life coordinator, wrote about their experience guiding a resident assistant from China through an unplanned pregnancy. "Two Dudes and a Baby" described the ways in which they replaced their uncertainty and lack of knowledge about pregnancy with a commitment to learn alongside their colleague and connect her with the resources she needed.

Perspectives magazine provides campus housing professionals with the means to share information and ideas.
