Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs)

Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs)
describe the knowledge, skills, attitudes, and values students are expected to demonstrate upon completing a course, academic program, or degree at Kansas State University. Built on the foundation of K-State’s mission, these outcomes ensure that student learning is intentional, transparent, and aligned with institutional values. By connecting learning to the university’s broader commitments to teaching, research, service, and engagement, SLOs encompass more than disciplinary knowledge. They also prepare students to be informed, productive, and responsible citizens who contribute to the prosperity of Kansas and the broader global community.

What Are Student Learning Outcomes?

SLOs serve as a foundation for designing courses, shaping curriculum, and assessing academic effectiveness. At K-State, SLOs support:

  • Clarity – Clearly defining what students are expected to achieve.
  • Curriculum Planning – Guiding course development and instruction.
  • Assessment & Accreditation – Demonstrating achievement to internal stakeholders and external accrediting bodies.
  • Continuous Improvement – Using outcomes data to inform instructional and programmatic enhancements.

Types of Student Learning Outcomes

SLOs are structured across several levels to capture the scope of student achievement:

  • Course-Level Outcomes - Specific to individual courses and tied to key assignments, activities, or competencies.
  • Program-Level Outcomes - Reflect the cumulative learning that occurs across a student’s major or degree program.
  • Institutional-Level Outcomes - Represent the broader competencies expected of all K-State graduates, such as communication, critical thinking, or ethical reasoning.

Student Learning Outcomes have 3 levels, Course-Level Outcomes, Program-Level Outcomes, and Institutional-Level Outcomes.
