Roles and Responsibilities
Data governance is a critical component of managing institutional data, ensuring its accuracy, security, and effective use across the university. This section details the specific roles and responsibilities within our data governance framework, highlighting the essential functions and authorities that support a cohesive and well-regulated data environment.
Data Custodians
Data Custodians oversee and manage institutional data systems that serve the university community. They have authority over the management and use of data in their areas, regardless of the system in which the data resides. Custodians appoint Institutional Data Stewards to manage specific data domains.
Institutional Data Stewards
Institutional Data Stewards operate at an enterprise level, defining data policies, procedures, and standards for their assigned domains across the institution. They are assigned by and accountable to Data Custodians and are responsible for the full lifecycle of data within their domains, ensuring consistent policy enforcement and collaborating with IT to implement security controls and access rules.
Data System Stewards
Data System Stewards manage specific data solutions at the ancillary system or application level. They handle day-to-day system operations, maintenance, user access provisioning, backup and recovery, system resource monitoring, and operational processes. Their role is tactical, focused on ensuring the functionality of their assigned systems.
Chief Data Officer (CDO)
The CDO leads the data governance program, advocates for initiatives, and integrates data governance with university strategies. The CDO collaborates with the Data Governance Steering Committee and Data Governance Steward Committee to align data management with institutional goals.
Director, Data Governance and Policy
The Director coordinates policy development and ensures compliance with standards, and serves as the primary contact for data governance inquiries. The Director supports the Data Governance Steering Committee and Data Governance Steward Committee to enhance the university’s data governance framework.
Data Custodians and Stewards Responsibilities
Data custodians and stewards hold responsibility for different aspects of data governance within their respective data system areas.
