Levels and Classes
Full-time students take 18-20 hours of classes every week. In general, students who come to study on an F-1 visa must be enrolled in a full course load of 18 credit hours. (For full information on enrollment requirements for F-1 and J-1 students, consult International Student and Scholar Services.)
Guidelines for placement into levels are found in the Student Handbook.
Beginning English I (DAS 136)
Beginning English I (DAS 136) is graded on a Credit/No Credit system. This class will not affect a student's Grade Point Average (GPA).
DAS 136 Listening/Speaking (6 credit hours)
The goal of this course is for students to develop basic listening and speaking skills in English.
This class meets for 100 minutes every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday in Spring and Fall semesters. This class meets every day in the Summer semester for 120 minutes.
DAS 136 Reading and Vocabulary (6 credit hours)
The goal of this course is for students to develop basic English vocabulary and literacy skills.
This class meets for 50 minutes every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday and 75 minutes every Tuesday and Thursday in the Spring and Fall semesters. This class meets every day in the Summer semester for 120 minutes.
DAS 136 Written Communication (6 credit hours)
The goal of this course is for students to develop basic English grammar and writing skills.
This class meets for 50 minutes every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday and 75 minutes every Tuesday and Thursday in the Spring and Fall semesters. This class meets every day in the Summer semester for 120 minutes.
Beginning English II (DAS 138)
Beginning English II (DAS 138) is graded on a Credit/No Credit system. This class will not affect a student's Grade Point Average (GPA).
DAS 138 Listening/Speaking (6 credit hours)
The goal of this course is to introduce academic skills in listening and for students to develop their ability to converse in English.
This class meets for 100 minutes every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday in Spring and Fall semesters. This class meets every day in the Summer semester for 120 minutes.
DAS 138 Reading and Vocabulary (6 credit hours)
The goal of this course is for students to build on their comprehension of basic English vocabulary and begin learning academic reading skills.
This class meets for 50 minutes every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday and 75 minutes every Tuesday and Thursday in the Spring and Fall semesters. This class meets every day in the Summer semester for 120 minutes.
DAS 138 Written Communication (6 credit hours)
The goal of this course is for students add to their basic English grammar knowledge and develop the writing skills necessary to produce paragraphs.
This class meets for 50 minutes every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday and 75 minutes every Tuesday and Thursday in the Spring and Fall semesters. This class meets every day in the Summer semester for 120 minutes.
Intermediate English I (DAS 140)
Intermediate English I (DAS 140) is graded on a Credit/No Credit system. This class will not affect a student's Grade Point Average (GPA).
DAS 140 Listening/Speaking (6 credit hours)
The goal of this course is for students to improve their ability to converse and to develop an ability to comprehend, take guided notes from, and discuss simple academic lectures and topics in English.
This class meets for 100 minutes every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday in Spring and Fall semesters. This class meets every day in the Summer semester for 120 minutes.
DAS 140 Reading and Vocabulary (6 credit hours)
The goal of this course is for students to continue learning the most common English vocabulary words and build on their academic reading skills.
This class meets for 50 minutes every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday and 75 minutes every Tuesday and Thursday in the Spring and Fall semesters. This class meets every day in the Summer semester for 120 minutes.
DAS 140 Written Communication (6 credit hours)
The goal of this course is for students to develop intermediate grammar skills and basic academic writing skills in English.
This class meets for 50 minutes every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday and 75 minutes every Tuesday and Thursday in the Spring and Fall semesters. This class meets every day in the Summer for 120 minutes.
Intermediate English II (DAS 150)
Intermediate English II (DAS 150) is graded on a Credit/No Credit system. This class will not affect a student's Grade Point Average (GPA).
DAS 150 Listening (3 credit hours)
The goal of this course is for students at the intermediate level to develop academic English listening skills for comprehending, discussing, and taking notes from simplified lectures.

DAS 150 Speaking (3 credit hours)
The goal of this course is for students at the intermediate level to enhance their speaking skills for personal and academic situations.
In-person this class meets for 50 minutes every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday in the Spring and Fall semesters and for 60 minutes every day in the Summer semester.
During Spring and Fall semesters, online students can expect to spend 6 hours each week on course work (synchronous class meetings, watching videos, reading, completing assignments, etc.). During Summer semesters, students will spend 12 hours each week on course work. Class meeting times for online classes will vary.
DAS 150 Reading and Vocabulary (6 credit hours)
The goal of this course is for students at the intermediate level to expand their academic reading skills and acquire academic vocabulary.
In-person this class meets for 50 minutes every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday and 75 minutes every Tuesday and Thursday in the Spring and Fall semesters. This class meets every day in the Summer semester for 120 minutes.
During Spring and Fall semesters, online students can expect to spend 12 hours each week on course work (synchronous class meetings, watching videos, reading, completing assignments, etc.). During Summer semesters, students will spend 24 hours each week on course work. Class meeting times for online classes will vary.
DAS 150 Written Communication (6 credit hours)
The goal of this course is for students at the intermediate level to improve grammar usage and to enhance their academic writing skills in English.
In-person this class meets for 50 minutes every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday and 75 minutes every Tuesday and Thursday in the Spring and Fall semesters. This class meets every day in the Summer semester for 120 minutes.
During Spring and Fall semesters, online students can expect to spend 12 hours each week on course work (synchronous class meetings, watching videos, reading, completing assignments, etc.). During Summer semesters, students will spend 24 hours each week on course work. Class meeting times for online classes will vary.
150 Fast Track is a special placement that is offered for students who qualify for Advanced English I (Exit Level) in three skill areas. These students will take three Advanced English I (DAS 15X) courses and one Intermediate English II (DAS 150) course.
Advanced English I (DAS 151, 152, 153, & 154)
Advanced English I classes (DAS 151, 152, 153, & 154) are graded according to the University's letter grade system (A, B, C, D, and F). These classes will affect a student's undergraduate Grade Point Average (GPA). For this reason, students are only allowed to enroll in 9 credit hours of these classes during the summers.
151 Speaking (3 credit hours)
The goal of this course is for students to develop advanced English speaking skills for personal and academic situations necessary for success in an American university.
In-person this class meets for 50 minutes every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday in the Spring and Fall semesters and for 60 minutes every day in the Summer semester.
During Spring and Fall semesters, online students can expect to spend 6 hours each week on course work (synchronous class meetings, watching videos, reading, completing assignments, etc.). During Summer semesters, students will spend 12 hours each week on course work. Class meeting times for online classes will vary.
152 Written Communication (6 credit hours)
The goal of this course is for students to develop advanced English academic writing skills incorporating more complex grammatical structures necessary for success in an American university.
In-person this class meets for 50 minutes every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday and 75 minutes every Tuesdays and Thursdays in the Spring and Fall semesters. This class meets every day in the Summer semester for 120 minutes.
During Spring and Fall semesters, online students can expect to spend 12 hours each week on course work (synchronous class meetings, watching videos, reading, completing assignments, etc.). During Summer semesters, students will spend 24 hours each week on course work. Class meeting times for online classes will vary.

During Spring and Fall semesters, online students can expect to spend 6 hours each week on course work (synchronous class meetings, watching videos, reading, completing assignments, etc.). During Summer semesters, students will spend 12 hours each week on course work. Class meeting times for online classes will vary.
Note: 163 Reading is not usually offered during the summers because of a lack of student demand.
166 Writing (3 credit hours)
The goal of this advanced English course is for students who are transitioning to the university to refine their academic writing skills.
In-person this class meets for three contact hours per week in the Spring and Fall semesters and every day in the Summer semester.
During Spring and Fall semesters, online students can expect to spend 6 hours each week on course work (synchronous class meetings, watching videos, reading, completing assignments, etc.). During Summer semesters, students will spend 12 hours each week on course work. Class meeting times for online classes will vary.
Note: 166 Writing is not usually offered during the summers because of a lack of student demand.
Undergraduate Support Classes
DAS 032: Training for Organization, Wellness, Academics, Responsibility and Discipline (TOWARD)
TOWARD engages ELP students who have repeated non-performance in their ELP classes. TOWARD includes an exploration of good study skills, healthy living habits, community involvement, and guided study sessions. This 2-credit class is required for continued enrollment for students with repeated non-performance (in terms of participation and attendance). DAS 030 TOWARD is taught as an in-person class only.
DAS 148: Basic ELP Orientation
This one credit hour course emphasizes the basic cultural and academic understanding necessary for new international students to be successful in ELP classes at K-State. Topics include introduction to cultural differences, campus resources, health and safety, study skills, housing issues, plagiarism, basic immigration rules, and classroom expectations. DAS 148 Basic ELP Orientation is taught as an in-person class only.
DAS 158: Orientation to the American Higher Education System
This orientation course supports English Language Program students as they make the transition to Kansas State University and the Manhattan community. An introduction to various campus resources is also provided to students in this 1-credit hour class.
DAS 169: Digital English
This course provides instruction in online language and communication for international students in order to develop strategies and skills for working effectively in academic digital interaction and collaboration. Topics include digital tools, skills for collaboration, rhetoric appropriate in specific online settings, and legal and ethical issues of online academics. This is a 2-credit class.
DAS 175: Business Communications for Non-Native Speakers
- Students should receive a passing grade (C or above) in ELP Exit Level course work (DAS 15X/16X) prior to enrolling in DAS 175.
- Students with low C’s in exit level writing (DAS 152, 162 or 166) are strongly encouraged to set up tutoring appointments for all written assignments upon beginning DAS 175.
- Students should not enroll after the 1st week of class. It will be difficult to catch up and succeed in the course if they miss the first week of the semester.
