Probation, Dismissal, and Appeals
In the Beginning English 1 (DAS 136) – Intermediate English II (DAS 150) levels, students can have the following ELP statuses: Good, Probation, Dismissed, Reinstated and Final Dismissal.
Student status does not affect student placement. However, a student who is not in Good status is required to take an Academic Coaching class.
Good Status
All Students enter the ELP in Good status. Students who earn 85% or more for their participation grade in all of their classes remain in Good status.
Students on Probation can return to Good status by receiving 85% or more in participation for all of their courses.
Students who are repeating the same level, even those in Good status, will be required to take a 2-credit hour Academic Coaching class in order to help them be successful.
Probation
The first semester that a student does NOT receive 85% in participation in six or more hours of their ELP classes, the student’s status is changed to Probation. Students in Probation take a Study Skills or Academic Coaching course the following semester.
From Probation, students can move back to Good status or to Dismissed status. If students receive 85% in participation in all of their classes, they move to Good status. If students do not get 85% in participation in all of their classes, they are dismissed.
Dismissed
Students who are in Probation and do NOT receive 85% in participation in ALL of their courses will be dismissed from the ELP. Students who are dismissed have an opportunity to appeal and can be reinstated.
Reinstated
Students who appeal and are admitted back into the ELP have a status of Reinstated. Reinstated Students in on-campus classes take the Academic Coaching class. Reinstated students in online degree programs will work with an ELP Advisor on a plan for their academic success.
From a status of Reinstated, students move either closer to Good status by being placed in Probation again or have Final Dismissal. If students receive 85% participation in all of their classes, they move to Probation again. If students do not earn 85% participation in all of their classes, they get Final Dismissal. (85% participation in ALL classes = Probation; Less than 85% participation in at least 1 class = Final Dismissal).
Final Dismissal
A Reinstated student and a student on Probation who continues with a pattern of poor attendance, which results in a grade of less than 85% in participation in at least one class is Finally Dismissed from the English Language Program and will no longer be able to take ELP classes with absolutely no chance of reinstatement. You must either make plans to go back home, or find another institution at which to finish your English language education. However, your admission to Kansas State University for a degree program remains open.
