Site Establishment
Research at the KAW field lab is used to develop sustainable conservation practices to protect water quality and maximize yield and profitability while simultaneously providing producers with flexible nutrient management and cropping system options.
A new waterway was constructed in July 2014 to divide the field and create an additional 6 watersheds.
Terrace channels were regraded and terrace ridges were reconstructed to clearly define watershed boundaries.
A 1.5 ft H-flume was installed on a concrete pad at the outlet of each watershed so surface water runoff could be measured.
Each watershed outlet was equipped with an automated water sampler and bubble-type pressure transducer to continuously record surface water runoff and collect flow-weighted composite samples of runoff water.
Four automated rain gauges (with manual rain gauge back-ups) were installed to measure precipitation.
