'What Were You Wearing?' Survivor Art Exhibit

Submitted by Hannah Ens

In recognition of April being Sexual Assault Awareness Month, Union Program Council and the Center for Advocacy, Response and Education have partnered to create the "What Were You Wearing?" Survivor Art Exhibit. This exhibit will be in the William T. Kemper Art Gallery from March 26 through April 6; the gallery is open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

This installation provides a tangible response to one of our culture's most pervasive rape myths: that victims are somehow to blame because of their clothing choices. The outfits featured are recreated from the real stories of survivors in the Manhattan-area community. Whether it's a ball gown or a pair of sweats, victims are never to blame. It may seem like a basic question, but asking, "What were you wearing?" can allow self-recrimination to unfairly take root in a victim's mind.

CARE is a confidential and free office for K-State students, faculty and staff in need of services or advocacy for issues related to sexual violence, dating violence, stalking and sexual harassment. The CARE office has advocates available for walk-ins 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday in 206 Holton Hall. Call 785-532-6444 for 24-hour assistance.

The William T. Kemper Art Gallery is free and open to the public. For more information, visit kstateupc.com or call 785-532-6571.
