Filmmaking tools worth more than $10,000 donated to 2018 K-State 48 Film Festival
Wildcats, grab your cameras and your coffee, the K-State 48 Film Festival begins this week. The competition offers any K-State student the opportunity to showcase their work and creativity through the creation of a short film — in only 48 hours. This year, participants will have exciting new equipment to win, thanks to several companies whose donations, in total, exceed $10,000 in value.
Audio and video companies, Koll Ltd., Miller Camera Support LLC and RODE Microphones, are prize sponsors this third year of the annual festival. Donations include professional-grade equipment such as microphones, lights, camera sliders, tripods and more. In addition to serving as prizes, a portion of the equipment will again be donated to the Information Technology Assistance Center, or iTAC, and the Media Development Center for the campus community to use and benefit from in the years to come.
"Once again, because of the generosity of our film industry sponsors, we are thrilled to offer a variety of exciting competition prizes to K-State students, and importantly, can donate additional video equipment to burgeoning filmmakers through our collaboration with the Media Development Center," said Rusty Earl, College of Education videographer and chair of the K-State 48 committee.
ITAC's Media Development Center is on the second floor of Hale Library and provides K-State students with video equipment, software and production training, and access to video editing software and computers, integral to the success of the festival.
"We're all excited for this year, and stand ready to assist students with their questions," said Jahvelle Rhone, information technology coordinator at the Media Development Center.
The kickoff for students begins at 6 p.m. March 29 in Town Hall at the Leadership Studies Building. The films will be judged by professional filmmakers and screened at the festival's red carpet premiere and awards ceremony, open to students, faculty and the public, at 6 p.m. April 5.
In addition to industry sponsors, the committee acknowledges the on-campus support of the College of Education, Office of Undergraduate Studies, Null Enrichment Fund, Union Program Council and Media Development Center.
The K-State 48 Film Festival is led by a diverse representation of faculty and staff from across the Manhattan campus, whose sole goal is to provide a platform for all K-State students to showcase their filmmaking and storytelling prowess, in a fun, collaborative and educational environment.
"Storytelling is integral to our society," said Donna-Schenck Hamlin, program associate for the Center for Engagement and Community Development and K-State 48 Committee member, "and the ability to tell a great story will serve every Wildcat student in their future, no matter their current academic discipline."
