Kansas Science Communication Initiative introduces workshop series
Interest in science communication is growing, so the Kansas Science Communication Initiative, or KSCI, sent out a survey earlier this year to identify topics of interest. This fall, the initiativeI will be offering workshops based on the feedback we collected.
Fall 2018 KSCI Works opportunities are as follows.
Please register soon — space is limited! Faculty, postdocs, graduate students, undergraduate students and staff are all welcome, as are individuals outside the university. Attendees are welcome to bring a brown bag lunch.
- Telling a Good Science Story. Sept. 14, noon to 1:30 p.m., K-State Student Union Cottonwood Room. According to Freeman Tilden, "You have seen nothing because you have seen everything." How many of us can say this is true about our presentations? A good story does not instruct; it provokes your audience to want to learn more. A good tale connects your story with their everyday lives. Discover how to turn data into a story that your audience will enjoy, remember, and connect with on a personal level. This workshop will be led by Schanee Anderson, curator of education at the Sedgwick County Zoo. Please register.
- Infographics 1.0: The Basics of When and How to Use Infographics. Oct. 3, noon to 1:30 p.m., 327 Justin Hall. Learn about the many uses of infographics for improving scholarship, teaching and outreach. Bring a tablet or laptop and receive a brief tutorial on infographic creation basics using an online drag-and-drop infographic editor. Led by Amber Vennum, associate professor of family and human services in the College of Human Ecology. Please register.
- Infographics 2.0: How to Turn Scholarship into an Infographic. Oct. 15, noon to 1:30 p.m., 327 Justin Hall. Have infographic basics down and are ready to communicate science? Bring some scholarship and walk through how to turn complex lit reviews, fancy statistics, and long discussions into clear, bite-sized main points using visual cues to manage flow, grab attention, and tell a story that sticks! Led by Amber Vennum. Please register.
- Do you really need to use social media to communicate your work? Nov. 5, 1-2 p.m., K-State Student Union Cottonwood Room. Your research is the most exciting and important science out there! But to have an impact, it must be communicated in ways that enable people to understand and compel them to care. Do you really need to use social media? How can you do so effectively without it taking over your life? Please register.
Please note that the Nov. 5 workshop will be led by Jory Weintraub, science communication director with the Duke Initiative for Science & Society and a senior lecturing fellow at Duke University. Weintraub's visit is part of Science Communication Week, which will be Nov. 5-10. He will offer an additional workshop to provide strategies and approaches to communicating your work to diverse audiences and compelling them to care. Look for separate registration for that opportunity soon!
