Veterinary Health Center joins effort to safely dispose of unused medications
Saturday, April 27, is the Drug Enforcement Administration's National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day. In Manhattan, prescription medications — including pills and patches, but not liquids/needles/aerosols/illegal drugs — can be returned from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at both the Riley County Police Department at 1001 South Seth Child Road and at Dillons, 1101 Westloop Place. Kate KuKanich, associate professor of small animal internal medicine in the College of Veterinary Medicine, invites the public to join in this effort on Saturday.
"The proper and timely disposal of unused medications minimizes the risk of prescription drug abuse as well as the risk for accidental ingestion by children and pets," KuKanich said.
KuKanich created a webpage to provide complete information on how to safely dispose of unused or expired medications in Riley County during the rest of the year. This website link is shared with clients of the Veterinary Health Center at Kansas State University, whose patients receive a prescription from its dispensary, to improve awareness of this public health issue and to encourage proper disposal of medications among its veterinary clientele.
