Interior design professor awarded professional grant

Submitted by College of Health and Human Sciences

Professor Kaup

The International Furnishings and Design Association's Education Foundation recently announced the winners of five professional grants.

Migette Kaup, professor of interior design, was awarded the Irma Dobkin Universal Design Grant, open to an individual involved in universal design in product development, a design project, education or marketing. The grant will provide support for Kaup and a team of four undergraduate students in the interior design program as they conduct a post-occupancy evaluation for a newly constructed co-living project at Garden Spot Village, in New Holland, Pennsylvania.

This research and educational initiative will focus on the strategies and values of inclusiveness in design. Through this work, students will learn and apply the skills needed to evaluate how the built environment functions for older adults. This information will then be used to inform the design for future co-living homes planned for the Garden Spot Village community.

Kaup is a professor and program coordinator for the interior design program. She specializes in gerontological and universal design. She is National Council for Interior Design Qualification and Evidence-Based Design Accreditation certified and her professional design practice includes more than nine years in architectural firms as well as seven years in private consulting to long-term care providers and design professionals.
