Submitted by Cadence Ciesielski

The Office of Pre-Law Advising will host legal speaker Kimberly Helvey at 4 p.m. Wednesday, March 4 in 215 Fairchild Hall.

Helvey is an immigration expert who resides in the Washington, D.C., area. There, she supervised attorneys, personally handled litigation, and coordinated immigration-related appeals of individual and class action immigration cases in most of the 94 federal district courts and courts of appeals nationwide. In 2012, she received the Civil Division's Special Commendation Award for her work on terrorism-related inadmissibility. She previously served as a trial attorney at OIL-DCS and advised immigration adjudicators as a service center counsel at the Department of Homeland Security's Nebraska Service Center in Lincoln.

A Wichita native, Helvey began her legal career by hanging her shingle and running the first immigration law office in Manhattan from 2005 to 2008. She is an honors graduate of the University of Kansas School of Law, where she was a Rice scholar. She is also an honors graduate of Kansas State University, where she received her bachelor's and master's degrees. Helvey taught Spanish and French for a few years before attending law school.
