Rice awarded honorary title by the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine

Submitted by Kathy Gehl

Dr. Charles "Chuck" Rice

Charles "Chuck" Rice, university distinguished professor of agronomy in the Kansas State University College of Agriculture, has been awarded the honorary title of national associate of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine. Membership in this group offered as a lifetime appointment.

Many dedicated individuals serve pro bono on committees that are active throughout the year. These same people also serve as reviewers of one or more of the Academies' draft reports. These services are valued, honored and appreciated by the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, as well as by the government and public at large. The academies' work in advising the government and public on matters of science, engineering and medicine would not be possible without these contributions. The honor of national associate is given in recognition of an individual's extraordinary service and dedication to the National Academies.

Rice was recently reappointed to a second term as chair of the Board on Agriculture and Natural Resources, a major program of the National Academies of Science, Engineering, and Medicine. His appointment as chair will end on Dec. 31, 2022. His first term as board chair began on Jan. 1, 2016, and lasted three years. Before serving as the chair, he completed two three-year terms as a board member.

Rice's selection as national associate grants him a special privilege — use of the Members' Center on the ground floor of the National Academies' building on Constitution Avenue in Washington, D.C.
