Young Writers' Workshop now accepting applications for online June program
Do you know eighth-, ninth-, or 10th-grade students who love to write? Encourage them to sign up for the seventh annual Young Writers' Workshop, June 22-26.
Sponsored by the Department of English in the College of Arts and Sciences, with support from the Beach Museum, the Young Writers' Workshop provides five days of creative writing workshops with the guidance of experienced K-State faculty and graduate students.
Enrollment is free but limited to 15 students to ensure close attention to students' creative work.
This year's workshop will take place on a secure online platform, given the university's limited operations in response to Covid-19.
"We are thrilled to announce the seventh season of the Young Writers' Workshop," said Katy Karlin, associate professor of English and program director. "This summer, the workshop will move online. But we will continue to engage middle-school writers with our full staff, a slate of visiting authors and a schedule packed with fascinating writing assignments and exercises. Young writers with active imaginations are encouraged to apply!"
Exit surveys from the 2019 class of young writers demonstrate the continued success of the summer program: 100% of participants agreed or strongly agreed that the instructors were encouraging and helpful, while 93% said they felt encouraged to continue writing creatively following the workshop.
"With the support of our alumni donors Helen and Duke Dupre and the co-sponsorship of the Beach Museum, we are looking forward to offering young writers the opportunity to develop their creativity and practice their craft, even as we negotiate restrictions on face-to-face activities," said Karin Westman, department head of English. "We are committed to investing in the arts and humanities and in the young writers of Kansas."
