Megan N. Campbell, senior in microbiology, Luther, Oklahoma, is this year’s recipient of the Michael E. Brown Alpha Tau Omega Mortar Board Leadership Scholarship. Campbell was presented the award at the Mortar Board Initiation Banquet on April 11.

The Brown Mortar Board Scholarship was established in 2009 and named for Mike Brown, current treasurer of the Kansas State Alpha Tau Omega Students’ Aid Endowment Fund for 33 years and Mortar Board advisor for 13 years. The award is for $1,000.

The award is given annually by the Endowment Fund, as selected by a joint committee of the president of the endowment fund, the Kansas State University dean of student life or designee and the director of the School of Leadership Studies or designee, to a member of Mortar Board who is a K-State student in good standing and is judged to be of good character and sound academic standing and who has substantially and meritoriously contributed to the quality of student life at the university and outstanding leadership in Mortar Board.

Campbell has been nothing short of outstanding as the president of the 2020-2021 XIX Chapter of Mortar Board Senior Honor Society. She has approached this last year with a spirit of innovation, perseverance and purpose. Campbell held the members to a high level of expectations as she successfully guided the chapter to complete all events and activities they otherwise would have done in a normal, non-pandemic year. While some could have used this as an excuse, Campbell did not and pushed forward by encouraging creativity and innovation among the exec team and committees, insisting that they uphold the strong legacy of the chapter. She continuously advocated for the members to make sure they were providing as engaging of an experience as possible. Finally, she held to the ideals of Mortar Board — scholarship, leadership and service — by staying actively involved and committed herself, often going above and beyond in her participation not only as the president but a member of the chapter.

Congratulations to Megan Campbell on her selection as the 13th recipient of the Brown ATO Mortar Board Leadership Scholarship.
