Distinguished alumni award winner in geography and geospatial sciences to present March 25

Submitted by Chuck Martin

The College of Arts and Sciences’ Geography and Geospatial Sciences department will host Virgil Wiebe at 3:30 p.m. Friday, March 25, in the Wildcat Chamber at the K-State Student Union. Wiebe will present “Cluster Bombs, Asylum and Mental Health.”

Following the presentation, Wiebe will be presented with the geography and geospatial sciences department’s 2020 Distinguished Alumni Award.

“Virgil has had an amazing career in immigration law working for the UN and other organizations," said Chuck Martin, head of the geography and geospatial sciences department. "After delays of more than a year because of the pandemic, it is wonderful to finally be able to welcome him back to campus where he will have the opportunity to interact with our current students and faculty and be honored with the department’s highest award for alumni.”

Wiebe is currently professor of law at the University of St. Thomas School of Law in Minneapolis, Minnesota, where he also served as director of clinical education and co-director of the Interprofessional Center for Counseling and Legal Services. Wiebe has also served as a visiting research fellow for the UN Institute for Disarmament Research in Geneva, Switzerland, and an international and immigration law consultant for the Mennonite Central Committee of the UN Office/Peace Section.

Wiebe received his Bachelor of Arts in geography/political science/pre-law in 1986 from Kansas State University and was subsequently awarded a Rhodes Scholarship to study at Oxford University.
