Hobson and Benavides to present Teaching and Learning Center Professional Development Series event today

As part of the Teaching and Learning Center Professional Development Series, Tess Hobson, postdoctoral fellow in the Staley School of Leadership Studies, and Mac Benavides, graduate teaching assistant in the Staley School of Leadership Studies, will present "What Does Our Teaching Sustain? Surfacing the Underlying Cultural Framework of Classroom Instruction" from noon to 1 p.m. Wednesday, April 20, via Zoom.
Culturally Sustaining Pedagogy, or CSP, asks educators to question the deficit lens we may be utilizing in working with students from underrepresented backgrounds and shift our focus to one that is asset based. From a CSP standpoint, underrepresented students possess assets for our classrooms. It requires a shift in mindset that helps educators meet the cultural needs of their students as we allow their cultural practices to contribute to our classroom communities. This is an approach that challenges Eurocentric ways of knowing, being and doing that have formally and informally been set as the norms in our learning communities.
The events in the Professional Development Series are free and no registration is required.
