K-State's Lubbers appointed to presidential advisory council on antibiotic resistance
The U.S. departments of Health and Human Services, Agriculture and Defense have appointed Kansas State University's Brian Lubbers, associate professor of clinical sciences, to the Presidential Advisory Council on Combating Antibiotic-Resistant Bacteria.
The Presidential Advisory Council on Combating Antibiotic-Resistant Bacteria provides advice, information and recommendations to the U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services. The council supports and evaluates U.S. government activities focused on fighting antimicrobial resistance in human health, animal health and environmental health. Using this One Health approach, members of the council have expertise from a range of backgrounds, including academia, industry, public health, advocacy, veterinary and agricultural production.
Lubbers, who has served as director of clinical microbiology in the College of Veterinary Medicine, is a nationally recognized expert in antibiotic resistance. He is a member of K-State's Beef Cattle Institute, has served on the board of directors with the Food Armor program, and chaired the Clinical Laboratory Standards Institute's Subcommittee on Veterinary Antimicrobial Susceptibility Testing. Prior to Lubbers' appointment, Mike Apley, professor of production medicine and clinical pharmacology, served on the presidential advisory council from 2015 to 2023.
