The President's Committee on Religion, Spirituality and Nonreligious Diversity presents the global observance information for April 22-28.
Passover, or Pesach — Monday, April 22, through Tuesday, April 30. Tradition: Judaism. Passover commemorates the deliverance of the Israelites from slavery in Egypt. It is celebrated for eight days with special prayers and symbolic foods at home, starting with the Seder, a ritual meal that re-enacts that ancient deliverance and emphasizes the freedom of the Jews under the guidance of God. The first two and the last two days are holidays.
Great Lent — March 18 through Saturday, May 4. Tradition: Christianity-Orthodox. In Orthodox churches, the Great Fast is a period of ascetic discipline, prayer and repentance.
