MANHATTAN — Kansas State University has awarded Kassebaum Scholarships to five high school seniors.
The university received 165 applications, and a selection committee chose 11 student finalists to interview for the Kassebaum Scholarship. Of those interviewed, Kevin Colle, Hutchinson, a senior at Nickerson High School; Lilian Colburn, Manhattan, a senior at Manhattan High School; Allison Burnett, Olathe, a senior at Olathe North High School; Sara Wallace, Overland Park, a senior at Blue Valley West High School; and Anna Weigel, Overland Park, a senior at Blue Valley Northwest High School, were chosen to receive a $5,000 scholarship.
Named in honor of former Kansas Sen. Nancy Kassebaum Baker, the Kassebaum Scholarship recognizes students, whose academic and extracurricular achievements reflect the potential for and desire to make a difference through energetic leadership in the public service arena.
"The selection of these incredible students was extremely difficult and rewarding," said Pat Bosco, vice president for student life and dean of students. "Our winners and finalists are so very accomplished and we know they will thrive as members of the K-State family."
The Kassebaum Scholarship has been awarded to 115 students since its inception in 2001. The university is a leader in its number of its Truman, Goldwater and Udall national scholars. Often recipients of these prestigious scholarships come from the Kassebaum Scholarship program.
