MANHATTAN — Kansas State University's Amber Berg, Centertown, Missouri, a third-year student in the regional and community planning master's program, is a finalist for the 2018 Harry S. Truman Scholarship.
The Truman Scholarship recognizes college students with exceptional leadership potential who are committed to careers in public service. The scholarship provides up to $30,000 in financial support for graduate education.
Berg, one of 194 students from 137 institutions who have been selected as finalists, will interview for the scholarship on Monday, March 26, in Kansas City, Missouri. The scholarship committee will announce the winners of approximately 60 scholarships nationwide on April 18.
If awarded the scholarship, Berg would use the funds to support her final two years of the five-year nonbaccalaureate master's program in regional and community planning.
Berg is involved in undergraduate research and is studying the influences of multimodal transportation infrastructure at U.S. universities on students' travel behaviors. She serves as a student planning representative for the Student Planning Association and president of Students for Environmental Action, a student organization that promotes awareness of environmental issues on campus and in the community.
A recipient of a 2017 Morris K. Udall Undergraduate Scholarship, Berg is a member of the University Honors Program and received spring 2016 and 2017 semester honors. She also has been involved with the Kansas chapter of the Sierra Club and is an intern with the Flint Hills Metropolitan Planning Organization, Flint Hills Regional Council and Kansas State University's Rural Grocery Initiative. A 2015 graduate of Bowling Green High School, she is the granddaughter of Candace McClure, Centertown.
