MANHATTAN — Registration is officially open for the third annual Virtual Summer STEAM Academy, the Kansas State University College of Education summer program that provides engaging, hands-on learning for middle school students in Kansas, nationwide and worldwide.
The camp is from 9 a.m. to noon June 5-22, and the course offerings cover STEAM, or science, technology, engineering, arts and music, topics.
Individuals can register for the academy, while classrooms can register for a hybrid version in which content is taught by academy teachers — veteran teachers from around the state — with assistance from the onsite educators in classrooms.
Registration for individuals and classrooms is $100 for all three weeks. Students or classes sign up for a new topic each week. Enrollment is open to students in grades 5-8 during the 2022-23 school year.
The academy offers more than double the number of topics offered last year, including the following:
• Block Coding Bootcamp.
• Celebrating the "Art" in Language Arts.
• Debate: The Art of Argument.
• Inspired by Art.
• Math Behind Games — Probability is Everywhere!
• Music Using STEM is Cool, or MUSIC.
• Planet Podcast.
• Powers Unite: Superhero and Supervillain STEAM.
• Stop Motion Animation Fun.
• A Voice Worth Hearing — Yours!
• The Comic Book Club.
Last year, the academy engaged approximately 375 middle schoolers in Kansas and international sites in Ecuador, Colombia, Nigeria and Japan.
Visit the Virtual Summer STEAM Academy website for details about the classes offered, the teachers leading each class and a report from last summer's academy.
