MANHATTAN — The side-splittingly funny Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain is strumming its way into Manhattan to perform at Kansas State University at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, April 11, as part of the McCain Performance Series.
The Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain is a group of singing, strumming ukulele players. There are no drums, pianos, backing tracks, banjos or pitch shifters; there's no electronic trickery — only a rich palette of orchestration afforded by ukuleles and singing, plus a bit of whistling. The evening's performance covers Tchaikovsky, Nirvana via Otis Redding and spaghetti western soundtracks.
Using instruments small and large, in high and low registers, the orchestra uses the limitations of the instrument to create musical freedom as it reveals unexpected musical insights. The Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain will challenge the way you think about music.
Tickets are available online at mccain.k-state.edu or at the ticket office in the McCain lobby from noon to 4 p.m. Wednesdays through Fridays. Tickets are also available by phone at 785-532-6428 during the same hours. Tickets for youth 17 and younger are half price for this show.
