Testing and Proctoring Guidelines

We ask faculty to help reduce demand for testing and proctoring in-person services by doing the following:

  • Replace high-stakes exams with alternative assessments, when possible. There are resources available to assist faculty in adjusting assessment measures.
  • Administer exams through Canvas.
  • Explore using a remote proctoring solution such as Honorlock with the understanding that remote proctoring costs are the responsibility of the department/college.

The university provides testing resources for students who need testing and proctoring support for academic courses as well as access to third party exams such as those required for licensing and professional certification.

Resources for Proctoring and Testing Accommodations

Honorlock

Honorlock is a virtual proctoring tool that is offered at no-cost to students at K-State if faculty choose to require proctored assessments.

  • Honorlock is automated proctoring with a live “pop-in” feature if warranted during a testing session.
  • Proctoring sessions are recorded by Honorlock which looks for suspicious activity and flags it.
  • Honorlock emails faculty if suspicious activity is detected and faculty are responsible for reviewing recordings to determine course of action.
  • All Honorlock proctored exams are paid for by the academic department of the faculty; this is a free proctoring option for students.

Other Types of Proctors

K-State Online classes offer students free online proctoring via Honorlock. If a student chooses an in-person proctoring option, the cost of proctoring is then the responsibility of the student. Any proctoring or testing fees other than Honorlock will be the responsibility of the student. Allowing a student to use a proctor other than Honorlock is at the discretion of the instructor. The instructor will also be responsible for vetting and approving any other proctors for students and arranging exams to be set up with outside proctors.

Types of typically approved proctors:

  • Honorlock (FREE online proctoring option for K-State online classes)
  • Testing facility at a university or community college campus. (Please reference the NCTA site for some available options. This list is not a complete list of acceptable testing centers.
  • County agent (extension office)
  • Adult learning center
  • Sylvan Learning Center/Huntington Learning Center (or equivalent)
  • Military base representative (if military personnel are overseas/deployed, we will approve on a case-by-case basis

The Student Access Center

To comply with ADA regulations, we must provide testing accommodations that have been approved by the Student Access Center (SAC). Students may request accommodations through the SAC and are encouraged to do so in a timely fashion. For questions about disability-related testing accommodations for Manhattan, Global, and Olathe students, contact the Student Access Center (785-532-6441 or accesscenter@ksu.edu).

College of Veterinary Medicine

The CVM Testing Center provides testing accommodations approved by the SAC for CVM students.

Testing Center in Salina

The Testing Center in Salina provides accommodated testing for Salina Campus. Students can be directed to Julie Rowe (785-820-7908 or jarowe@ksu.edu) for more information.

All other exams will be handled at the discretion of the academic department and faculty, in line with university policy.

Third Party Exam Testing Centers
