Faculty and graduate students in curriculum and instruction present at NCTE conference
Faculty and students in the College of Education's department of curriculum and instruction presented at the National Council of Teachers of English conference in Boston, Massachusetts, Nov. 21-24. The theme of the conference was "Heart, Hope, and Humanity."
Kristin Bellinger, doctoral student and reading interventionist at Rock Creek Middle School, presented a poster on her dissertation titled "Writing Their Way to Well-Being: How Journals Were Used with Adolescents to Integrate SEL and Academic Writing on Well-Being Topics."
Samantha Goldstein, graduate student and English language arts teacher at Liberty North High School, presented a round table "Reading-Writing Connected Teaching Model and Strategies."
Suzanne Porath, associate professor, presented a poster on "Pages of Influence: Student-Created Bookshelves."
In addition, Porath mentored Goldstein in a roundtable session titled "The Future is Now: Exploring 21-Century Teaching Ideas with the Next Generation of English Teachers." Goldstein presented "Blended Literacy Workshop with the 6Ms."
Ambyr Rios, assistant professor, presented "Harnessing Poetic Power: Using Poetry to Inspire Heart, Hope, and Change in the ELA Classroom" with colleagues from multiple national institutions.
The conference continued into the Assembly for Adolescent Literature Workshop where Porath presented "Navigating the Waters: Contemporary Challenges in Teaching Young Adult Literature in Public Schools."
