How to simplify a student's transition from a two-year institution to a four-year institution was the subject of the Regents Core Outcomes Project meeting at Kansas State University on Sept. 27.
Around 550 people from the 32 postsecondary institutions that fall under the Kansas Board of Regents attended the meeting, which was hosted by K-State at the K-State Student Union and at the Alumni Center. Representing the regents at the event was Karla Wiscombe, the assistant director of academic affairs/transfer coordinator for the board.
Ruth Dyer, K-State's senior vice provost, said the goal of the Kansas Board of Regents Core Outcomes Project is to align the learning outcomes for the lower-level general education courses offered within the state. At this year's meeting, 20 disciplinary groups met to develop the learning outcomes for 23 courses and begin discussions for an additional 15 courses.
"The dialogue and interaction among the faculty are critical to the eventual success of this project. We were very pleased with the large turnout of faculty from across the state to participate in the various disciplinary sessions," Dyer said.
This process helps assure students of learning the same content wherever they take the courses within the regents institutions. Core outcomes also help provide a smoother transition from two-year institutions to four-year colleges and universities.
