Turkish journalist to speak on campus
Mustafa Akyol, an author and columnist for two Turkish newspapers, will present "Democracy and Freedom: Case in Eastern Culture" from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday, Oct. 28, in Town Hall at the Leadership Studies Building. The presentation is free and open to the public.
Akyol, who lives in Istanbul, Turkey, published his book “Islam Without Extremes: A Muslim Case for Liberty” in 2011. His articles also have appeared in The New York Times, Foreign Affairs, Newsweek, The Washington Post and The Wall Street Journal.
Jane Fishback, associate professor of educational leadership in the College of Education, believes this is an important opportunity for people interested in international issues.
"After having the good fortune to travel to Turkey this past summer, I was struck by the emphasis on education that is present in this rapidly advancing country," Fishback said. "Turkey's place on the world stage both currently and in the future is significant. Mr. Akyol's presentation will focus on issues confronting his nation as it moves forward and becomes a more dominant player on the world's stage."
