Financial incentives offered to returning students to break their housing contracts

Living on campus is a popular choice at K-State. Even though the university increased on-campus housing this past year, the demand has exceeded any of the university's expectations.
To ensure late-arriving freshmen can live in the residence halls, housing and dining services is offering a $1,000 financial incentive for returning students who are willing to cancel their contracts and move off campus for fall 2011.
"This program has been initiated by the university, and because of the inconvenience we're asking our returning students to consider accepting the financial incentive and allow us to buy out their contract," said Pat Bosco, dean of students and vice president for student life. "This financial support will assist them in securing off-campus housing. If you have a contract with our housing department you are not affected unless you are a returning student and wish to take advantage of our buyout incentive.”
The financial incentive will be provided on a first-come, first-serve basis to a limited number of continuing residence hall students. They will receive a full refund of their housing pre-payment.
"We encourage returning residence hall students, many of whom have knowledge of the university and community and are able to find housing off campus, to consider canceling their contract," said Derek Jackson, director of housing and dining services.
Those returning to the residence halls who are interested in this program are encouraged to contact housing and dining services for more information. Students seeking additional resources for off-campus housing options, as well as roommate pairings, can contact housing and dining services for up-to-date information available within the community.
Moreover, four additional apartment buildings will open in August 2012 to accommodate undergraduate students, graduate students and their families who want to live on campus in an apartment setting.
"Our apartment community continues to grow and our commitment to house students and their families remains steadfast," said Stephanie Bannister, associate director of housing and dining services. "This is an exciting time of growth for our department and we are honored to be K-State students' home away from home."
