K-State Libraries hosting International Games Day activities
K-State Libraries will join hundreds of libraries throughout the country on Nov. 16 for the sixth annual International Games Day, a celebration of gaming in libraries. Activities are all come-and-go from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Video games games from "Journey" to "Lego Star Wars," board games from Chutes and Ladders to Settlers of Catan, and cards will be available in Hale Library's third floor Great Room, with snacks and prizes for participants. All ages are welcome, and there is no cost to attend.
"Games in education, including higher education, are gaining more and more attention in recent years as an important teaching practice," said Daniel Ireton, assistant professor and undergraduate and community services librarian. "The 2013 Horizon Report indicates that games have 'proven to increase soft skills in learners, such as critical thinking, creative problem-solving and teamwork.' Games are changing the way we think and learn, and exploring and understanding games has become more important than ever. In order to create greater awareness of games in education and the presence of games in libraries, K-State Libraries is excited to join our partners in observing the 2013 American Library Association International Games Day."
Participants are invited to tweet about their experiences and follow the hashtag #igd13. The day's events are co-sponsored by the Libraries, Game Hounds, the English department, Manhattan Public Library, iTAC, Varsity Donuts and the Student Association of Graduates in English. International Games Day is a initiative supported by the American Library Association.
