Walk Kansas 2014: Celebrate healthy living
Join Riley County K-State Research and Extension in Walk Kansas 2014. This is an eight-week fitness program that encourages individuals to increase their physical activity and improve their eating habits with the support of team members. Family, friends or co-workers form teams of six and work together to compile minutes equivalent to walking across Kansas or around the perimeter of the state. Fifteen minutes of moderate physical activity, such as biking, walking, hiking, swimming or water aerobics, count as one mile toward the team’s Walk Kansas goal.
Each team identifies a goal or challenge it wants to reach. Three challenges are offered. Challenge 1 is the distance across the state, and would require each member to reach the minimum guidelines for physical activity, 150 minutes per week. To reach Challenge 2, the team must go across and back, or five hours per week for each participant. Challenge 3 takes the team 1,200 miles around the perimeter of the state, a six-hour-per-week goal for each person.
The program runs from March 16 through May 10. Team packets are available at the Riley County K-State Research and Extension office, 110 Courthouse Plaza, Room B220, during regular business hours or register your team online at http://www.riley.ksu.edu.
The team registration fee is $30 by March 7 — $42 after that date — and includes program events and weekly newsletters offering nutrition, health and physical activity tips and recipes. The last day for teams to register is March 14. T-shirts and other apparel are available for an additional fee.
