Faculty participate in Pipe Organ Encounter at K-State
Six faculty members provided both private and workshop instruction for the Pipe Organ Encounter, July 6-11, including David Pickering, assistant professor of music who served as director of the event, and Mary Ellen Sutton, professor emerita of music.
Twelve teenage organists from California, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska and Texas attended the weeklong encounter, sponsored by the Kansas State University-Manhattan Chapter of the American Guild of Organists and Kansas State University.
They received six hours of private instruction, attended various workshops and traveled on a field trip to Lincoln, Nebraska to visit the factory of Bedient Pipe Organ Co. and three organs built in contrasting styles located in area churches. A closing student recital ended the week's festivities.
The event at Kansas State University was one of five conducted under the auspices of the American Guild of Organists throughout the United States. Other sites included Bridgewater State University in Bridgewater, Massachusetts; Colorado State University in Fort Collins, Colorado; University of Indianapolis in Indianapolis, Indiana; and in Wilmington, Delaware.
