Clark publishes about C. Clifford Flanigan work
Submitted by Robert L.A. Clark
Robert Clark, French professor in modern languages, is the guest editor of "The Ritual Life of Medieval Europe," an anthology recently published that honors the memory of C. Clifford Flanigan, a very distinguished specialist in medieval theater and liturgy in the comparative literature department at Indiana University.
"It would be hard to exaggerate the impact that his teaching and scholarship had on a generation of students in Comparative Literature and Medieval Studies, but his wide-ranging interests also included literary and cultural theory, theory and practice of performance of drama and ritual, even detective fiction," Clark said.
"His first published essay, 'Roman Rite and the Origins of Liturgical Drama,' won the Elliott Prize from the Medieval Academy of America in 1976," Clark said. "With the late Thomas Binkley, a renowned specialist in the performance of early music, he participated in the staging of nine liturgical dramas or services, including the Greater Passion Play from the Benediktbeuron manuscript, performed both in Bloomington and at the Cloisters Museum in New York City."
