Legislative update March 3
The Kansas Legislature last week completed Turnaround Day. This is the day all House bills except those touched by an exempt committee and all Senate bills also not exempt must either be passed to the opposite House or not be acted upon in the 2015 legislative session.
This week, the Legislature will convene for a short week on Wednesday to begin hearings on bills passed in the past several weeks. The Kansas Legislature will meet through March with first adjournment planned for April 3.
During this short week, the Senate Ways and Means Education Subcommittee is scheduled to make budget decisions on higher education and higher education institutions. The full Senate Ways and Means Committee will receive the recommendations on Thursday at their meeting.
In other action, the House Education Committee will have hearings on HB 2266 requiring higher education institutions to adopt a policy on sexual assault, domestic violence, dating violence and stalking. The Kansas Board of Regents will provide testimony outlining policies and procedures the institutions currently have in place.
