Mathematics Colloquium lecture this afternoon

Submitted by Reta McDermott

Shawn Baland, University of Washington, will present "Modules of Constant Jordan Type, Pullbacks of Vector Bundles and Generic Kernel Filtrations" as part of the Mathematics Department Colloquium Lecture series at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 7, in 122 Cardwell Hall.

The abstract for the lecture:
Let E be an elementary abelian p-group of rank r and k an algebraically closed field of characteristic p. In 2008, Carlson, Friedlander and Pevtsova introduced kE-modules of constant Jordan type. Shortly thereafter, Benson and Pevtsova discovered some interesting functors F_i from the class of modules of constant Jordan type to vector bundles on projective (r-1)-space, where i ranges from 1 to p. The theme of this talk will be developing some sort of geometric dictionary between the representation theory of kE and the geometry of P^{r-1} via the functors F_i. I'll introduce some structural invariants of a kE-module M that allow one to compute the bundles F_i(M) more efficiently and speculate about what role these invariants might play in a bigger picture. This is joint work with Kenneth Chan.
