Prepare for severe weather season
Submitted by Division of Communications and Marketing
As Kansas State University prepares for severe weather season, take some time to familiarize yourself with the university's severe weather procedures and alert systems.
The K-State Police Department will use K-State Alerts, the university's emergency notification system, to alert the campus community of potentially severe weather. Outdoor sirens and the alert beacons located in buildings across campus will sound when the need to take cover is necessary.
If you are outside when the sirens go off, seek shelter immediately. Go into the closest building and find the lowest floor in the center of the building, away from windows.
You can sign up online to receive K-State Alerts and you can find updates on weather conditions and campus conditions on the advisories page.
Also, the university recently created the Crisis Response Center, which is a phone bank that can be activated during a campus emergency to assist students, parents and the K-State community. The university is seeking volunteers willing to answer calls during an emergency. Volunteers are required to attend training and will receive learning and development credit from the Division of Human Capital Services for their commitment.
If you are interested in volunteering, contact Laurel Moody at 785-532-6432 or lmoody@k-state.edu.
The K-State Alerts emergency system will be tested at 10:23 a.m. today.
