Forming new routines to support wellness
Submitted by Human Capital Services - Benefits
If you are joining your K-State family on the journey to "Live Your Best," are you finding ways to change your routine to make room for more activity? If you haven't joined yet, it isn't too late. By making a few changes in your day, you can boost your physical activity level and improve your health.
While living an active life is part of an ongoing journey of wellness, sometimes getting started can be the biggest hurdle. Some simple ideas to get more active:
- Try a walking or standing meeting.
- Set an idle alarm such as BreakTime or a reminder on your calendar to get up and move every hour. The American Diabetes Association has indicated that "more and more research is finding that sitting too much for long periods of time is harmful to our health. Just getting up once an hour to stretch or walk around the office is better than sitting for hours on end in a chair."
- Go for a swim. Nothing is better than a cool dip and swimming can be a great cardiovascular exercise. Did you know K-State has an indoor swimming pool on the Manhattan campus?
- When planning a family activity or trip, be sure to include activity in your schedule — such as swimming or hiking. The Employee Assistance Program can help find these activities for you.
- Take a 5-10 minute walk before and/or after lunch and dinner.
- Have you been wanting to try out CrossFit? K-State's kinesiology department offers a free class every Saturday morning from 10-11 a.m.
