Landscape architecture and regional & community planning department to host colloquium
The Department of Landscape Architecture and Regional & Community Planning, LARCP, will host its first colloquium of the 2015-2016 academic year.
Blake Belanger, landscape architecture and regional & community planning associate professor, will present "Representing Resilience: Applications of Graphic Communication in Rebuild by Design" at 4:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 25 at the LARCP Crit Zone at APD West, 5970 Executive Court, the college's temporary facility by the Manhattan airport. The colloquium is free and open to the public.
In the colloquium, Belanger will address resilience theory and its emergence as an important framework for understanding and designing urban areas. Visual aids such as maps, diagrams, perspective views, and photomontage are frequently used to communicate ideas and spatial/temporal strategies, yet there has been little discussion of effective graphic techniques for representation.
Belanger will present his research on graphic communication techniques used to represent concepts from resilience theory. He will provide specific examples created by the Rebuild by Design competition winning teams; identify representational strategies for communicating characteristics of resilient systems; and discuss how designers and planners are well-positioned to contribute to the ongoing dialogue about urban resilience.
