Dorhout to deliver lecture at Los Alamos National Laboratory

Submitted by Sarah Hancock

Peter Dorhout, vice president for research, will deliver a Seaborg Institute Lecture at the Los Alamos National Laboratory in Los Alamos, New Mexico.

His Sept. 14 lecture, "A Yankee in Yeltsin's Court — How f-Element Chemistry Prepared Me to Avoid an Interdict in Leadership and International Diplomacy," will chronicle his 20-year relationship with several divisions of the Los Alamos National Laboratory, during which time he studied f-elements, and his related travels in the former Soviet Union starting in the late 1990s. Dorhout will discuss the f-element chemistry he and his colleagues developed and how it helped build relationships in the Russian Federation and develop his leadership skills.

The G.T. Seaborg Institute for Transactinium Science at Los Alamos integrates research programs, provides science focus, and enhances education on the chemical, physical, nuclear and metallurgical properties of the light actinide elements, with a special emphasis on plutonium.

The institute serves as a center for the education and training of students, visiting scientists and faculty at all educational levels, and it facilitates ideas and research teams for the laboratory and the nation by supporting postdoctoral fellows and students researching and launching new nuclear science initiatives.
