Office of International Programs Vernon Larson Lecture presents 'Art Education: Through the Lens of Social Entrepreneurship'
The Office of International Programs and the College of Education are partnering to present the first Vernon Larson Lecture of spring 2017.
"Art Education: Through the Lens of Social Entrepreneurship" will feature Trina Harlow, K-State's College of Education coordinator of art education; Muneera Alonazi, graduate student in curriculum and instruction and K-12 educator from Saudia Arabia; and Marie Taylor, undergraduate student in art education.
This lecture will take place from 1-2 p.m. Monday, Feb. 13, in 21 Bluemont Hall.
Harlow is a 25-year art educator who has taught in Uganda, Ecuador, Switzerland, Texas and Kansas. She serves as the volunteer education outreach coordinator for the International Folk Art Alliance in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Harlow works tirelessly to improve the quality of life for artists around the world through social entrepreneurship, exposing the future educators she now teaches "art with a global lens."
"Art is storytelling," Harlow said. "When we use the art curriculum to tell a larger story with a world view, we are using art as the classroom and the art experience in a 21st century way. When artists are successful, they can share their craft in an impactful manner that feeds their families, builds schools and hospitals locally while growing supply chains globally."
"This lecture will focus on specific examples that folk art and the artists that create are making significant contributions and how their stories serve as examples to educate and broaden the lens for all humanity," she said.
Alonazi was a featured student artist in fall 2016 with a gallery exhibition in the College of Education showing her mixed media pieces.
Taylor attend meetings in Santa Fe with Harlow and experienced first hand what it was like working with international artists and Indian nations in the pueblos in and around New Mexico.
Please join us on Monday as we continue to celebrate the diverse opportunities K-State offers our campus community.
