Summer School Advisory Council funds new summer programs through RFP process

After reviewing proposal requests for new summer programs, Kansas State University's Summer School Advisory Council has approved funding for three programs for K-State Summer 2017.

Programs include selections from the College of Business Administration, the College of Education and a joint program between K-State First, the College of Arts and Sciences and the College of Education.

• Jump Start Program for Transfer Students in the College of Business
  
  This program will serve incoming transfer students from Kansas community colleges by offering key courses, GENBA 101 and GENBA 110, in an intensive August preterm workshop-style format with additional resources and experiences for students.
  
  
• Leadership in Practice with Mandela Washington Fellows in the Staley School of Leadership Studies in the College of Education
  
  This program will integrate students in LEAD 405 with the visiting Mandela Washington Fellows, providing a global experience for students locally. LEAD 405 is required for the Leadership Studies minor.
  
  
• Leading the Way: A K-State First Summer CAT Community, an interdisciplinary program in the College of Arts and Sciences and the Staley School of Leadership Studies in the College of Education
  
  This program will reach new freshmen in the Colleges of Arts and Sciences, Education, and Human Ecology and will allow them to become integrated and familiar with the university prior to their first fall term.

The programs were selected through the proposal request process through K-State Summer, which seeks to develop and schedule new and innovative programs each summer. The deadline to submit proposals for summer 2018 is still months away, but it's never too early to submit your new ideas.

Proposals may be submitted by faculty, departments, colleges or other units that offer academic programs. The goal of this request is to provide incentives for faculty and departments to take advantage of the opportunity to develop new programs over and above their existing K-State Summer School offerings. All proposals must be approved by the department head and dean prior to submission.

Criteria to evaluate the programs include, but are not limited to:

• Retention and degree completion value.
• Outreach to new audiences.
• Integration of the program into the traditional curriculum.
• Interdisciplinary or collaborative programs across departments or colleges.

K-State Summer School will provide marketing and logistical assistance in the implementation of the new programs.

Applications also must include a cover letter, which addresses:

• Potential impact.
• Relationship of project to program, college, or university strategic goals.
• Program objectives.
• Benchmarks for measuring success of the program.
• Enrollment caps (if any) and frequency of offering the program.
• Approval signatures from department head, dean, principal investigator(s).
