K-State students, faculty to be panelists at AAUW's International Women's Day celebration
The Manhattan Branch of the American Association of University Women, or AAUW, has planned several activities to celebrate International Women's Day on March 8.
The annual event is a global day of recognizing and honoring the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. AAUW has assembled a panel of local international women to speak with various groups throughout the day.
The panelists include Dr. Fatma Radhi, who is originally from Baghdad, Iraq. She arrived in the U.S. in 1994 and finished her medical training in 1998. Radhi moved to Manhattan in 2001 and is a neurologist in Manhattan's medical community. Paola Paez, Costa Rica, first came to the U.S. to obtain her doctorate. She returned to her homeland and came back to the U.S. in 2015 to accept the position of research associate professor with K-State's Center of Excellence for Food Safety Research in Child Nutrition Programs.
Two K-State students are also among the panelists. Sneha Gullapalli, master's student in computer science, Hanuman Junction, India; and Maria Fernanda Rivero Perez, senior in marketing and international business, Santa Cruz, Bolivia.
The day begins with a Community Women Leaders Breakfast at Manhattan High School, prepared by students in the culinary arts program. Following breakfast, the panel will speak at an MHS student assembly.
The day culminates with a dinner and public forum in the Landon Room of the Holiday Inn at the Campus, 1641 Anderson Ave. The forum will feature a panel discussion moderated by branch member and city of Manhattan Mayor Usha Reddi. The panel will share issues relative to women's rights and equality in their home country. The dinner begins at 6 p.m. with a cost per plate of $20. Reservations can be made by emailing your name and contact information to manhattanksaauw@gmail.com by March 3. A reservation is not necessary to attend the public forum which begins at 7 p.m.
Plan to come and bring a friend as our community celebrates this important day of acknowledging women.
