Sorority chosen to host national initiative to promote body image awareness
Submitted by Communications and Marketing
The Delta Delta Delta chapter of Kansas State University is hosting the first Delta Denim Drive as a part of the National Fat Talk Free Week, Oct. 16-21. The chapter is one of seven chapters in the nation chosen to promote National Fat Talk Free Week.
Delta Delta Delta will be collecting denim for the drive from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. today through Thursday, Oct. 20. Denim may also be taken to residence hall common areas collection boxes and the chapter house at 1834 Laramie St. The denim drive is to encourage women and men to reevaluate their closets and donate the clothes that make them feel self conscious about their bodies.
"Research has shown that keeping clothes in our closet that no longer fit can be damaging to self-esteem and can contribute to negative body image," said Mollie Colpitt, senior in dietetics and body image coordinator for Delta Delta Delta. "This event is like none other because our overall goal is to gain awareness that everyone is beautiful the way they are. Striving for the unrealistic, thin ideal look that society proclaims as beautiful is a waste of time and will only make you unhappy in the end. We want everyone to strive for the healthy ideal, which looks different on everyone. Through the denim drive we want people to have a better understanding of fat talk, body image and the importance of loving our bodies."
In conjunction with the denim drive, there will be fun activities supporting positive body image at the K-State Student Union throughout the week, with the help of the campus group, Sensible Nutrition and body image Choices, SNAC. Denim donated to the drive will go to Cotton's From Blue to Green denim recycling program. The program takes old denim and uses it to make sustainable insulation for homes built for those less fortunate.
