Dance show in the William T. Kemper Art Gallery Oct. 31

Submitted by Stephen Loch

The dance program's Dance Composition class has been working with Chance Procedures used by Merce Cunningham to create a short dance. The result will be shown at 3 p.m. Oct. 31 in the William T. Kemper Art Gallery at the K-State Student Union.

Cunningham was a leader of the American avant-garde throughout his 70-year career and is considered one of the most important choreographers of our time. Collaborating with John Cage, the two made extensive use of chance procedures, abandoning not only musical forms, but narrative and other conventional elements of dance composition — such as cause and effect, and climax and anticlimax. For Cunningham the subject of his dances was always dance itself.

Come help us carry on the tradition of dance making with this free, five-minute showing, accompanied by music from Cage, a Dia de los Muertos exhibit as backdrop, and discussion to follow.
