K-State celebrates National First-Generation College Student Day on Wednesday, Nov. 8

Submitted by Rebeca Paz

K-State has more than 5,000 first-generation undergraduate students and will be celebrating National First-Generation College Student Day, Wednesday, Nov. 8.

NASPA: Student Affairs Administrators in Higher Education, the world’s largest student affairs professional association, joined recently with The Suder Foundation, which sponsors K-State’s First Scholars Program, to create the NASPA Center for First-Generation Student Success. This new national organization designated Nov. 8 as a day of celebration for students who are striving to become the first in their families to earn a bachelor's degree.

Celebrate K-State's first-generation students between 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 8, in the K-State Student Union. Pick up free buttons, meet members of the K-State First-Generation Student Organization, and watch back-to-back screenings of the 55-minute K-State College of Education-produced film, "A Walk in My Shoes: First-Generation College Students." Rusty Earl, the film's creator, will introduce the film, which has been admired by the likes of first lady Michelle Obama and broadcast on Kansas KTWU, a PBS affiliate.

Coincidentally, Suder Foundation founders, Eric and Deb Suder, will visit K-State on Nov. 8 and 9, in part, to meet with all four classes of current K-State First Scholars, including an initial meeting with our newest cohort. We are deeply grateful for the Suders’ many years of support and honored that they chose to visit K-State on National First-Generation College Student Day.
