Music professor featured at symposium on American band history
Craig B. Parker, associate professor of music, was featured at the University of Georgia American Band History Symposium, April 19-21. He presented a lecture-recital on "The Music of Sousa's Cornet Soloists," during which he performed cornet solos by Herman Bellstedt, Herbert L. Clarke, Walter B. Rogers, Gioachino Rossini, Frank Simon, and John Philip Sousa. His renditions were interspersed with commentary on the cornetists who were featured as soloists during the 40-year history of Sousa's band and also on the music they performed.
Parker was a panelist – along with Frank Cipolla of the University of Buffalo, George Foreman of the University of Georgia and Patrick Warfield of the University of Maryland – on a session devoted to "The Current State of American Band History Research." Parker was adviser in the subject area of brass and wind performers for the forthcoming "Grove Dictionary of American Music," and is chair of the American Band History Research Interest Group of the Society for American Music.
