Two award-winning instructors in Kansas State University's College of Business Administration are being honored as the first recipients of the college's new Edgerley Outstanding Instructor Fellowship.
Scott Hendrix, instructor of finance and Gates Capital Management faculty fellow, and Donita Whitney-Bammerlin, instructor of management, will serve in the fellowships for the next two academic years: 2012-2013 and 2013-2014.
The fellowships were made possible by Paul and Sandra Edgerley, Brookline, Mass., who have established or contributed to a number of university scholarships, funds and faculty chairs – primarily in the College of Business Administration.
Hendrix and Whitney-Bammerlin were selected for the fellowships by a four-member faculty committee from the college.
"Scott and Donita each serve as outstanding examples of the high quality of the instructors we have in the College of Business Administration," said Ali Malekzadeh, Edgerley family dean of the College of Business Administration. "I congratulate them both for their excellence in teaching, innovation and service to their students and the college. Their efforts demonstrate how the College of Business Administration is helping the university meet its goal of becoming a top 50 public research university by 2025."
Since joining the university in 2002, Hendrix has earned multiple honors for his teaching and advising, including the university's Commerce Bank Outstanding Undergraduate Teaching Award and the college's Kansas State Bank Outstanding Teaching Award, Ralph E. Reitz Outstanding Teaching Award and the Kansas State Bank Outstanding Advising Award. He also was recognized by the university's office of student activities and services as the 2009 adviser of the year. The honor was based on his efforts in guiding the Student Finance Association and playing a key role in the group's first face-to-face meeting with billionaire Warren Buffett in March 2009. Since then, Hendrix has helped the group meet with business magnate three more times in Omaha. He was named the College of Business Administration's Gates Capital Management faculty fellow in 2009.
Hendrix has a bachelor's degree and a master's in business administration from the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga.
Along with teaching courses in organizational behavior, event planning management, honors and leadership, managing diversity, and training and development, Whitney-Bammerlin advises five university student organizations: Students in Free Enterprise, Collegiate Agri-Women, Golden Key International Honor Society and Phi Kappa Theta and Phi Gamma Delta fraternities. As adviser to Students in Free Enterprise, she was named a Sam Walton fellow for the organization.
Whitney-Bammerlin has been honored for her teaching and advising with the university's Presidential Award for Teaching Excellence and the college's Kansas State Bank Outstanding Advising Award. She received a national honor from the nation's oldest business fraternity Alpha Kappa Psi, the Friend of Alpha Kappa Psi award. She also helped create, develop and implement the university's award-winning Brigade Command Team Spouse Development Program, which earned the Malcolm Knowles Award for Outstanding Adult Education Program of the Year from the American Association of Adult and Continuing Education in 2010.
She has been active with the university's Rural Engagement and Action Leadership, or REAL, Project, and is a lecturer for the university's Presidential Lecture Series. Whitney-Bammerlin also was selected for the inaugural "Dancing With the K-State Stars" competition in 2009.
Whitney Bammerlin joined the university in 1989. She earned her bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees from Kansas State University.
