2018 Vanguard Lecture Series to feature Sally Campbell Galman
Author Sally Campbell Galman will present "The artist and Peter-Both-in-One: Unlearning adultist method in social justice oriented qualitative research with young children" as part of the 2018 Vanguard Lecture Series at 10 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 1, in 21 Bluemont Hall.
Campbell Galman is the author of the popular Shane series of qualitative research comics, and will share excerpts of her newest book, "Naptime at the O.K. Corral: Ethnographic Research with Young Children," as part of this lecture. In this lecture, Campbell Galman will discuss the story of Peter Both-in-One, a 6-year-old transgender study participant entangled with her own story. In this storytelling, Campbell Galman will problematize how adult ways of doing qualitative research can be questioned to find alternate, responsive, innovative and socially just methods of working with children.
Positioning her own work as both a cultural anthropologist and a visual artist against the history of qualitative research with, for, by and on children, Campbell Galman, as a researcher-artist seeks to reconstruct what social justice-oriented research with young children can and should look like. Recommendations for practice, as well as a discussion of story and art in research with children will be included in the lecture.
The lecture will be available via Zoom.
